National Regatta 2002

Tarlair Model Boat Club hosted the National Regatta of the Scottish Federation of Model Boat Clubs on Sunday 4th August 2002.

Proceedings started with a social evening which was arranged for the visiting modellers. This was an informal gathering to allow the members of the various clubs who had travelled to the area to meet up and have a 'bit of a blether'. This was very much appreciated and a comment was made at the end of the night that this was the best regatta ever. That was before the real event had even started. Despite miserable weather for the whole of the previous week, the Regatta was held in brilliant sunshine, on one of the warmest days of the year.

Twelve clubs were represented from as far afield as Borders Model Boat Club, in the Scottish Borders to Pentland Model Boat Club from Thurso, on the far North of the mainland. The hundred and sixty boats on display made a spectacular sight when they were laid out in rows on the judging tables. There was every conceivable type of vessel on display from a miniature Viking Longboat to a seven foot American Naval Destroyer. From a West Coast Car Ferry to a five foot high, fully rigged Spanish Galleon. There was even a model submarine which was put through its paces in the pool. A crowd of between two and three thousand turned up and cars were parked in every available space.

The various competitions attracted large entries and the results were as follows :- STAND OFF SCALE - First was FRED O'BRIEN, of the GLASGOW RICHMOND CLUB, with an RAF LAUNCH and second was RON THOMSON, of GLASGOW SOUTH SHIP MODELLERS CLUB, with a model of a West Coast Ferry.

STEERING AND DOCKING - The local Tarlair club won their first trophy of the day, in the Junior section of this event, when JOHN D CAMPBELL of TARLAIR came a very close second to D. SMITH of GLASGOW SOUTH.

STEERING & DOCKING - In the adult section, the winner was NIGEL COATES of the EDINBURGH MODEL BOAT CLUB. Second was DOUG LOVE of DUNDEE MODEL BOAT CLUB and third was DEREK DUGUID of TARLAIR MODEL BOAT CLUB. DEREK claimed the Junior title at the National Regatta, held at Govan in 2001 and this was his first year in the senior ranks. At only sixteen years of age, Derek was by no means disgraced to come third to two very experienced competitors.

NOMINATION - First to go was NIGEL COATES of EDINBURGH who was only three seconds off his nominated time. This proved to be an unbeatably close margin but there was to be a dramatic fight for second place when two competitors had the same difference between their nominated and actual times. J. McNEIL of EAST KILBRIDE MODEL BOAT CLUB was fifteen seconds faster than his nominated time while ERIC CARRINGTON of EDINBURGH MODEL BOAT CLUB was fifteen seconds slower than his. After a very close run off, J. McNEIL claimed second spot leaving ERIC CARRINGTON in third. .

NOVELTY - DEREK DUGUID, of the TARLAIR CLUB, picked up his second trophy of the day for the best novelty entry. His entry was a duck which looked very realistic sailing around on the pool.

FAST ELECTRICS - DUNDEE were the only club to enter with DOUG LOVE coming first and JIM GILL taking second place.

BOXED KIT - First was FRED O'BRIEN of GLASGOW RICHMOND with a STEAM DRIFTER, second was TED MILLER of PENTLAND MODEL BOAT CLUB with a TUG and third was DAVID HAMILTON of EDINBURGH with the STEAM SHIP "EMDEN".

SEMI KIT - First was JAMES DONALD of TARLAIR MODEL BOAT CLUB with a beautiful model of the FISHING BOAT "CONQUEST". Second was TED MILLER of PENTLAND MODEL BOAT CLUB with FRED O'BRIEN of GLASGOW RICHMOND taking third spot.

SCRATCH BUILT - In first and second places in this section was JOHN WEBSTER of PENTLAND MODEL BOAT CLUB with two immaculate models of local fishing boats. Third place went to D HAY of LANG TOON MODEL BOAT CLUB in Kirkcaldy. JOHN WEBSTER'S model of the "CONSTANT FAITH" was also judged 'Best in Show' and gained him the 'Sandy Cousins Quaich'.

The Club will again host the Regatta this year, on Sunday 6th August, starting at 11.00 a.m.
